For many years Melanie Ryan was owner of an award-winning holistic health center in the Hudson Valley Region of New York. Her mission has always been to educate, empower, and provide options for holistic health and healing from ancient traditions. At the end of 2019, Melanie was intuitively guided to close her center and began studying naturopathy. She became a student of Dr, Marizelle Arce, a naturopathic terrain doctor and nutrition expert. Melanie entered an intense and intimate apprenticeship with Dr. Arce that continues today.
During the mid to late 1800s, a time when people drank alot of whiskey and smoked cigars, a renowned physiologist named Claude Bernard, discovered that the environment (terrain) was the cause of disease. He taught that the terrain of the human body was most important when it came to excellent health and preventing disease.
Terrain Model empowers individuals to act responsibility and provide the proper environment for themselves. Our body needs organic, nutrient dense foods free of pesticides that provide the right amount of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Our water and environment need to be clean, pure and healthy. Nature provides an abundance of resources and healing power. The Earth is abundant! Nature also reduces stress, anxiety and enhances creativity, imagination and intuition. In nature we find relaxation and inner peace that is necessary for health and wellbeing.
The modern medical system has taught us that we are victims of our DNA, powerless to the genes passed on to us from our parents and grandparents. We are taught to fear nature and that we are not capable of healing on our own. There is a problem in when a system perpetuates fear, disempowerment and quick fixes. The Terrain Model is a new paradigm of health that recognizes our true nature. We are entering a new chapter in human history where we remember the Oneness of all things. Using toxic chemicals, cutting, and burning as main forms of treatment of the old system. A new level of consciousness is here. One that restores health by aligning with nature.
Three Main Causes of Disease
The Terrain Model works simply. It teaches that there are just three causes of disease.
1. Malnutrition – vitamin and mineral deficiency, including water.
2. Toxemia – toxic overload and accumulation that destroys cells and tissues, the most common cause of disease today.
3. Trauma – trauma can come in many forms both physical and emotional. It can be a car accident, injury, or impact. Trauma can be chronic negative thoughts and beliefs as well as forms of abuse: emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Trauma can be neglect, abandonment, chronic shame, guilt, and anger. It can be human and sex trafficking, bullying, and exposure to violence and more.
Malnutrition is defined as lacking the proper nutrients, minerals, vitamins and water. Modern society is obsessed with health, yet we are sicker than ever before. The processed food and busy lifestyle is growing an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. We can now predict that our children will not live as long as us. There is no question about it, we must change, and the change starts with you.
“In a 24-hour period, we could be exposed to over two million chemicals that are synthetic, meaning not from nature. Our bodies do not have the mechanism for processing this level of toxic overload and therefore it gets stuck and accumulates in our body. This is a major cause of disease.” Dr. Andrew Kaufman, MD Terrain Documentary.
Toxemia is an overload of toxins. These toxins include sugar, caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, pharmaceuticals, mercury from dental fillings, pesticides sprayed on your food, household cleaners, soaps, shampoos, makeup, synthetic clothing, synthetic supplements. Plastic water bottles alone have up to 24,000 chemicals. Not to mention the pollution in the air. The list goes on.
Our culture is full of toxic, destructive patterns. In the United States, holidays have lost their religious meaning and have been taken over by sugar and chemical products that put children on the path of food addiction and chronic illness. Almost every single month of the year we are celebrating with sugar and alcohol.

Unhealed Psychological Trauma
The Famous ACE Study
We now know that childhood trauma has a direct correlation with adult chronic disease. The CDC-Kaiser ACE Study (Adverse Childhood Experiences) is one of the largest investigations of childhood abuse and neglect and household challenges and later-life health and well-being. The original study was conducted at Kaiser Permanente from 1995 to 1997. The initial study focused on how traumatic childhood events may negatively affect adult health. The 17,000 participants surveyed were asked about their experiences with childhood maltreatment, family dysfunction, and current health status and behaviors. The ACE study found a direct link between childhood trauma and adult onset of chronic disease.

German New Medicine
One of the most leading diseases overloading the health care system is cancer. Thanks to Dr. Rkye Geerd Hamer, we know that unresolved emotional trauma causes cancer. He used his own personal experience of losing his son suddenly, and subsequently developing prostate cancer two years later. As an OB-Gyn, he studied all of his patients who had developed cancer and then looked to see if they had unresolved trauma in their lives. He discovered that ALL his patients with cancer had sustained a sudden shock trauma approximately 2 years earlier. He then later expanded his research to include other organs/sites of cancer and discovered that the type of trauma determined the part of the body that developed the cancer. (Nickerson Institute called Psycho-Oncology: How Unresolved Emotional Trauma Can Cause Cancer).
Trauma & the Soul
Trauma is a wound to the psyche - the soul - and the core of our being. Melanie has been working with people in trauma & addiction recovery for 30 years and has learned both modern and ancient wisdom ways of healing. Though medication can help relieve symptoms, pills do not heal trauma, they suppress. True healing is a healing of the soul and a return to wholeness. Our native ancestors around the world have known for thousands of years that trauma creates a wound to the soul and must be treated energetically/ spiritually. Modern medicine falls short of this and has yet to embrace that we are mutli-dimensional beings beyond space and time. This is why we see our culture overcome by depression, mental illness, chronic disease and addictions. Melanie Ryan developed a Transmuting Triggers practice, which is a practice of meditation, active imagination and energy healing of the soul, helping us return to wholeness and living a conscious, creative life.
Dr. Nancy Appleton, PhD. Suicide by Sugar tells her story of how she nearly killed herself by the food she ate. According to Appleton, sugar addiction is the number one addiction in our nation.
Dr. Barbara Reed Stitt, PhD. Food and Behavior, shares the story of how Dr. Stitt discovered the relationship between sugar and processed foods with delinquent behavior. Her work has been responsible for the removal of soda machines and refined and processed foods in school systems.
